Foxwoods Resort Casino nestles within the Connecticut woods in Ledyard. The casino is the largest in the northeast and, in addition to gaming, visitors can enjoy restaurants, shops, entertainment, four hotels, a spa, golf courses and the Mashantucket Pequot Museum, the world's largest Native American Museum. Spend the day among the glitz and action of the casino and then retreat to the quiet peace of one of the area's campgrounds, many within a half-hour's drive.

Preston

Preston is 10 to 15 minutes from Foxwoods and home to Strawberry Park, a campground with 540 sites for RVs and tents; the park also rents cabins and trailers. Strawberry Park features pools, whirlpool spas, a rec room, horseback riding, and areas for basketball, soccer, horseshoes, volleyball and bocce. There's a mix of gravel and grass sites and each site has a fireplace and picnic table. Annual music festivals include one celebrating bluegrass and another featuring Cajun/zydeco music.

Tent Camping Near Foxwoods Casino

Beside the Quinebaug River in Preston, the Hidden Acres Family Campground has more than 180 wooded campsites, along with cabin rentals. Amenities include a pool, snack bar, hayrides, free cable and Wi-Fi, a playground and a craft shop. Camp right by the river and enjoy fishing or canoeing.

Mystic

Seaport RV Resort and Campground is less than 20 minutes from Foxwoods in Mystic. Choose from 145 tent and RV spaces, and check out the pool, game room, playground and rec hall. As of publication, according to the website RV Park Reviews, new owners Sun RV Resorts were making many upgrades, including paving all roads. Sites include water and electric but no sewer, although the park offers pump-out service. Campers noted that the sites were roomy and the campground quiet.

The Mystic KOA campground has tent sites and both pull-through and back-in sites with full hookups. The campground has pools, miniature golf, fishing, outdoor movies, a jumping pillow and bike rentals. Special weekends include water wars, with pool games and bring-your-own water pistols, and Christmas in July, with awards for the best-decorated campsites.

Bozrah

About 30 minutes from Foxwoods, Acorn Acres in Bozrah has more than 200 sites, most with water and electric hookups and some with sewer. Acorn Acres also has cabins for rent. The campground has a pool, miniature golf, horseshoes and courts for tennis and basketball. There's also a pond for swimming and fishing.

Odetah Camping Resort has a total of 321 sites. In addition to RV and tent sites, Odetah has cabin and yurt rentals. Amenities include boats to rent on the lake, a water trampoline, free Wi-Fi, miniature golf and a cafe that will deliver meals to your campsite. Every weekend from May through October, and every week from mid-June through August, has a different theme, such as a 'Willie Wonka' weekend, a Wild Wild West week and a NASCAR week.

East Lyme and Niantic

East Lyme is a half-hour from Foxwoods; Niantic, which is part of East Lyme, is another five minutes away. Rocky Neck State Park in Niantic offers 160 flat, paved sites, some wooded but more of them open. There are no hookups. The campground is about a mile and a half from the beach, where you'll find fishing, swimming, picnic areas and food vendors.

Aces High RV Park in East Lyme has 90 sites with hookups, as well as rental cabins. Three ponds provide views, swimming and fishing; guests can rent a paddle boat or surf bike. Some weekends feature a fishing derby, and there's a pig roast Labor Day weekend. Reviewers on the RV Park Reviews website note that it's a quiet park, possibly because there are few kids' activities offered, so campers tend to be older adults.
