The January running of the 2020 Card Player Poker Tour Ocean’s 11 San Diego Classic kicked off on Thursday, January 23. This marks the eleventh time that the CPPT has made it’s way to beautiful Oceanside, California to for this $250 buy-in main event, with more than 8,200 entries made and more than $2.1 million in prize money awarded in the prior ten events.

The tournament features a $150,000 estimated prize pool this year but has previously drawn as many as 949 entries to create a prize pool worth nearly a quarter of a million dollars. The most recent running of this tournament drew 926 entries back in July of 2019. Brazilian poker pro Mateus Lessa emerged victorious in the end, earning $43,120 as the champion.

Thursday saw the first two starting flights of the six on offer for this event held, beginning at 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. local time. Flight 1A attracted a total of 114 entries, while flight 1B added another 115. With 229 total entries so far the prize pool has already grown to $45,800 with four starting flights still available to play.

Players will also be able to take advantage of the popular Quantum Tournament structure of this event and buy-in on Day 2 for $1,500. Those who exercise this option will receive 210,000 in tournament chips, with the blinds starting at 2,000-3,000 with a 3,000 big blind ante for the beginning of day 2 at 12:00 p.m. local time on Sunday, Jan. 26.

From the 229 entries in flights 1A and 1B, only 28 players made it through to day 2, with Tai Reyes-Purpero bagging up the largest stack of 526,000. Other top stacks include Frank Benchanan (398,000), Tim Steeves (373,000) and Brandon Strickland (342,000). The top 12 percent of players from each starting flight qualified, locking up at least a $400 payday in this event in the process.
