So this raises the question: What precautions are being taken at the gambling venues in the event that the coronavirus rises to the level of a higher concern in Ohio?

Operators of the three gambling properties in the Cleveland/Akron area - MGM Northfield Park, JACK Cleveland Casino and JACK Thistledown Racino - say they are being vigilant in following federal health guidelines to keep their facilities clean and guests safe, though they declined to discuss specifics.

The virus is already impacting the casino industry, from outside the country.

Macau, an autonomous region of China, ordered all its casinos closed for 15 days in February, though they have since reopened. Among those closed was MGM Macau, leading to MGM’s decision to withdraw its earnings forecast. Stock prices have fallen, with MGM opening Thursday at $20.60, down from a close of $33.34 on Feb. 20, according to Yahoo Finance tracking.

Ohio’s casinos and racinos got off to a fast start to the year, according to the latest reports from the state’s regulating commissions. Gambling revenue, after paying out winnings, was up 19% in January over one year ago to $167.5 million at the 11 facilities. February reports are due out next week.

The facilities are large places that attract a lot of people, with 19,000 slot machines and 400 gambling tables across the state.

MGM Northfield Park is Ohio’s busiest racino, operating 2,200 slots-like video lottery terminals. JACK Thistledown in North Randall has just under 1,500 machines. There are 130 tables and 1,330 slots at JACK’s downtown Cleveland property.

Both MGM Northfield Park and JACK declined to respond to specific questions about their policies, including how often chips, cards and machines are cleaned, instead providing statements by email:

The Ohio Department of Health notes there have been no confirmed case in Ohio and that the “current risk to the U.S. general public is low; however, the CDC advises all Americans to prepare for the possibility of a COVID-19 outbreak in their communities.”

State health officials are advising caution, referring to recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Centers for Disease Control believes that the virus spreads from person to person, within about 6 feet of one another. But the Centers also notes that it is possible that a person could be infected by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose or maybe eyes.
